DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

My family and I left the Bronx when I was six to move to the suburbs and the memory that still sits with me is the sound of the train that ran over the top of White Plains Road. I imagine myself taking the 2-Train to get around the city and meeting so many different people. My life would have been completely different if I never moved. What if my parents never left the Bronx?

This led me to making my “What If” story combined with a good bit of fiction. I’ve always been fascinated by people’s intentions wanting to get to the root of what makes us, us. It’s not only our actions that define us but our intentions as well. Around the Block is a story about a young boy wanting to get out of the Bronx, but has to make some compromising decisions to do so. Perspective is important. Context is important. What lengths would you go to change the course of your life?
